Netflix Might Be Hurtin’ Thanks To Its Crackdown On Naughty VPN Users

A report on streaming media services in Australia has found Netflix‘s growth has taken a hit, quite likely due to its crackdown on people using VPN’s to access Netflix’s (way superior) international content.

Thanks to the crazy mess that is regional licensing and pressure from their content providers, Netflix has been getting incredibly diligent about stopping folks from getting around geographical IP restrictions, forcing people to stick with the like 8 movies and 10 TV series available on Aussie Netflix.
The study’s author reckons it’s either that or because Australian services Stan and Presto are making shit just for us:
“It could be some of the changes to Netflix VPN policies as well as the increased number of local shows and content deals on other providers such as Stan and Presto. Local content is starting to make a difference. It’s definitely a drawcard, and stitching up more content deals has been a big push from the providers.”
The punters are going nuts for streaming, with research group Telsyte reporting that 1 million new Aussies have bought subscriptions in the last year, the bulk of those going to Stan and Presto.
Others have not done so well, Queensland-based music streaming service Guvera just yesterday went into receivership, owing their creditors a cool $20 million.
