Fashion Labels Are Already Slinging Overpriced Face Masks That’ll Do Nothing To Protect You

In news that’ll have you completely lost for words, Australian fashion label Natalie Rolt has been called out for selling “quality” reusable face masks that offer zero protection against coronavirus.

While some people genuinely use face masks as a fashion accessory, this is far from Natalie Rolt’s typical aesthetic of high-end gowns and jumpsuits. This isn’t an edgy streetwear brand that would otherwise sell these masks, this is a high-fashion brand.

The reusable cotton face masks retail for $30, featuring the word “together” embroidered across the nose. However, the masks aren’t medically graded, which means they’re about as helpful as covering your face with a scarf or a turtle-neck.

According to an Instagram post on Saturday, the company designed the masks to “‘relieve demand in order to ensure that medically graded masks are available for valued front liners.”

The masks come with a pocket, so people can insert their own air filter “if desired.” However, without inserting one, this mask does precisely fuck all to protect you from viruses like COVID-19.

It’s important to note that the company is clearly stating the product’s lack of medical grading in their Instagram post, so at least they’re being honest.

“We recognise that our facial mask isn’t perfect however in these times, our team are doing all that we can,” the company concluded their Instagram post.

The comments on the Instagram post have since been turned off, but not before dozens of people pointed out how insensitive it is to profit off the back of a pandemic.

“This is not going to protect you whatsoever,” one user wrote.

“I love your brand but this has to be said – I really feel ill about anyone trying to make a profit off this shit show …people are legit dying and your selling $30 face masks to “help” it just doesn’t sit right with me I’m sorry,” another added.

Natalie Rolt is yet to release a statement following the backlash, however, the masks appear to be unavailable on the website at the time of publishing.

We’re currently facing a shortage of important medical supplies like face masks and hand sanitiser. If you’re lucky enough to be working from home or self-isolating, please leave these items for the people who need it most.

If you think you may have coronavirus, either call your doctor (DON’T visit) or contact the national Coronavirus Health Information Hotline on 1800 020 080. If you’re struggling to breathe or experiencing a medical emergency, call 000.
