Narwhal the Little Magical Furry Unicorn, the abandoned puppy which just so happens to have a tail growing smack-bang out of his forehead, has found a permanent home: with the US animal rescue group which first housed the little fella.
The Southeast Missourian reports Rochelle Steffen, founder of the Mac’s Mission organisation, has decided to raise Narwhal instead of offering him up for adoption.
Steffen said the decision was as logistical as it was emotional. Mac’s Mission usually fields a handful of enquiries for each animal seeking a forever home, but the organisation’s volunteer staff were swamped with 300 applications to take Narwhal.
That avalanche of enquiries – plus what Steffen called “stupid, ugly comments about this sweet little puppy” from deadshits online – convinced her to retain the dog and its bonus appendage.
Oh, there’s also the fact Narwhal is a little heartbreaker.
“It’s not just a decision from me,” Steffen said.
“The whole rescue cannot fathom him leaving. We all fell in love with him.”
Narwhal came into the care of Mac’s Mission last month and quickly became a social media sensation.
Steffen said that hype caused people to launch “giant” offers to purchase the pup, and that Mac’s Mission volunteers watch the dog around the clock to ensure no extremely cooked units attempt an, uh, ‘unsanctioned’ adoption.
Instead of relinquishing the high-profile pup to a potentially exploitative home, Steffen said she has plans to train Narwhal as a therapy dog, enabling the tiny champion to do genuine good with his delightful noggin.
Once Narwhal grows into his tails, that is.
