In case you were an aspiring musician who plans on entering the Project: Aloft Star competition (more on that below) but you’re also one of those people who refuse to read the fine print of anything, we’ve got you covered.

We sussed out the ins and the outs of comp, which invites unsigned individuals and groups to submit an audio file or music video of an original song they’ve put together (which can be of any genre, mind you) with finalists sent on a trip to perform their heart out against other finalists at Aloft Seoul Myeongdong in South Korea. The winner(s) will score a record deal with Universal Music.

Not even kidding, we can’t stress enough how much of a big deal this is – literally and figuratively. Entries close July 31st too so move your ass.

To get your head around what Aloft Hotels – renowned promoters of up-and-coming talent with their own Live at Aloft Hotels music program – and Universal is looking for in the winners, we found the five main criteria that you’ll be judged on – all worth 20% each.

  • Artistry & Musicianship
You’ll need to know your stuff (or at bare minimum the basics) if ya wanna impress the tawp dawgs.
  • Vocal Expression
You know how certain artists can make you feel what they feel? You need that.
  • Originality & Creativity
Ain’t no point handing over a song that sounds like it should be on Guns ‘N Roses‘ cutting room floor.
  • Commercial Potential
You’ll have to go with your gut with this one – some truly obscure music makes it big so your guess is as good as ours.
  • International Appeal
If your sound is that good, you’re bound to have a certain level of universal charm.

Obviously, even though it’s a competition for your ‘average’ Joe, Universal still need to choose someone who’s actually talented and marketable, so you best believe you should be practising your dope stage persona and hitting up your old singing coach for some last-minute tinkering.

Alex Dyson has a coupla more tips to get you across the finishing line below:

As literally anyone with a song can enter, consider digging up some old demos you made but didn’t think much of it – for all you know it could be a bloody gem that blows ’em away.
