I’m Obsessed With This British Guy Who Won The Best Mullet At Kurri Kurri’s MulletFest

British graphic designer Rob Ayton has just been crowned “best international mullet” at the annual Mulletfest event in NSW and now I am a little obsessed with him.

The 31-year-old first cut his mullet three years ago as a joke while on holidays in Australia, and although he didn’t love it at first, the style has really grown on him.

Now, back in Australia, Rob decided to try his luck in the annual Mulletfest competition in the NSW town of Kurri Kurri. And as luck would have it, he took out “best international mullet” at the event, which is frankly a huge honour.

‘I’ve never been a fan of the mullet or the rats tail, but I have to say I do like the mullet now so my point of view has changed dramatically,’ he said.

“It genuinely feels like it’s been a religious ceremony for me, Australia — you’ve been amazing,” he told Daily Mirror.

If you’re unfamiliar with Mulletfest, it’s a beloved event on the Kurri Kurri calendar in which the community comes together to celebrate the mullet. For the third year in a row, the event has seen some of the best mullets from around the world come together to celebrate the iconic hairstyle.

The event features seven different categories including “everyday”, “grubby”, “ranga”, “vintage”, “extreme”, “international” and “junior.” There’s also a best overall winner, who can proudly call themselves the best mullet-grower in Australia for an entire year, which is truly a priceless honour.

Taking place on March 1, the event is held at the local Chelmsford Hotel, where punters can kick back with a beer or two and admire god’s greatest gift to humanity, the mullet.

This year’s event saw a whopping 250 people compete for the title of Australia’s best mullet, in the town that regards itself as the “mullet capital of Australia.” Honestly, I’m willing to give it to Kurri Kurri, they’ve got their fair share of mullets

If you needed more of a reason to make the trek to Kurri Kurri for next year’s event, they also use the festival to raise much-needed funds for local charities. Realistically, it’s a win-win.

Contestants are judged on their hair, overall presentation and stage presence, so if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be making the trek next year to meet my future husband.

In addition to winning MulletFest 2020, Rob also vlogged the whole thing, if you’re interested in immersing yourself in all of the greasy goodness that is MulletFest.
