Miyazaki Making ‘Porco Rosso’ Sequel?

Japanese animation auteur Hayao Miyazaki is planning a sequel to his 1992 film ‘Porco Rosso’, one of the few films the director made set in a real world context (facist Italy during the post-war depression) about the titular WWI fighter pilot-turned-bounty hunter who is cursed with the face of a pig: “I’d rather be a pig than a fascist.”

In a recent interview with Japanese magazine Cut Miyazaki spoke about a follow-up to the acclaimed film: “…I want to escape to “Porco Rosso: The Last Sortie”. I have all its materials… It should be interesting… It is set for Spanish Civil War.” The original movie (while not as popular as Miyazaki’s universally celebrated My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away) left the future of the protagonist very open ended, so fans will be stoked at the prospect of experiencing the next chapter of Porco Rosso – and whether or not he’s still doing time with a snout.

Admirers of extraordinary cinema animation should also get themselves sorted for September’s Semi-Permanent Melbourne which hosts a killer line up of creative guests including powerhouse studio Pixar.
