Mike Baird Is Soz A Female MP Took Offence To His “Calendar Shoot” Quip

Today, NSW Premier Mike Baird commented on his steadily declining approval rating, but hey – the big fella doesn’t really seem all that concerned.

Yesterday in Question Time, Bairdy decided to reduce a female MP down to her appearance, as many male politicians tend to do. He loudly interrupted Member for Strathfield Jodi McKay to talk about her past potential to be NSW Labor Deputy Leader, but then started flailing about like a toddler who had too much sugar and yelling “She’s up there doing calendar shoots! Who wants me?! Who wants me?!”
(He also decided to do a really strange flappy straight-white-male dance thingy, but we can’t even be bothered tackling all the things wrong with that, tbh.)
McKay posted the video to her Facebook page, saying that it’s “not funny nor is it appropriate to liken women seeking leadership to a ‘calendar shoot’”:

We should be doing all we can to encourage women into leadership roles in NSW – this behaviour shows how far we still…

Today, Baird has issued a faux-pology, saying that is McKay is offended, he will apologise. But he also added that his comments were only “light banter”.
Two issues with this:
  1. You did something shitty. Apologise for it. This ‘If you are offended’ bullshit doesn’t count as an apology.
  2. She *is* offended. You can clearly see from her Facebook post that she is offended by what you said.
  3. Reducing female peers to their appearance isn’t ‘light banter’, it’s sexism.
Furthermore, Baird then went ahead and said that those kinds of exchanges are commonplace in Parliament, and that it’s part of some kind of a Labor smear campaign against him ?????????

“Pretty much every question time this year, Labor has come in and tried to smear me one way or another.”
UGH. Mike, your Premiership being smeared into oblivion is happening completely and totally by your own hand. Believe us.
