Mike Baird Announces Tough New Bail & Firearm Laws In Wake Of Sydney Siege

NSW Premier Mike Baird has announced some tough new laws surrounding denying bail to those who are, or have been linked to terrorist activity. The laws also cover people who have been seen to be advocating for an extremist group, or people who return to Australia after being a ‘foreign fighter’. 
There was public outcry about the lack of legislation on this topic, after it was uncovered that Sydney Siege gunman Man Haron Monis had multiple previous criminal charges, but had been granted bail each time.

Along with these tougher bail laws, Baird also announced that the NSW Government will be launching the ‘Illegal Firearms Investigation & Rewards Scheme’. But while ‘rewards scheme’ kind of sounds like it could be some kind of friendly cashback offer that’s stickytaped to the box when you buy an iron, but it’s actually big dollars for dobbing people in for having guns. 
The scheme offers ‘up to $10,000 for information that leads to a conviction for the possession or use of illegal firearms’, and new laws will now imprison offenders for a maximum of 14 years.
