Two Men Arrested Following Alleged Sexual Assault Of A Woman In Carlton

Two men have been arrested in Melbourne following a public appeal for information by Victoria Police regarding an alleged sexual assault on Lygon Street in Carlton in the early hours of Sunday June 17.

A 23-year-old man handed himself into police this morning, and has since been charged with abduction, two counts of rape, unlawful imprisonment and theft.

A short time ago, a 26-year-old man also handed himself in, and has been taken into custody to be interviewed by police.

In their appeal, police sought three male witnesses caught on CCTV in the area – all three presented to Epping Police Station last night to speak to investigators.

Police on Thursday said that a pair of friends in their 30s had taken a taxi from a nightclub in the city to the corner of Lygon and Grattan Streets at about 4am on Sunday, whereupon one woman entered a nearby convenience store, leaving the other on an opposite street corner.

Then, at approximately 4.30am, the woman on the street was picked up in a vehicle and taken to an unknown location, where she was sexually assaulted.

She made it home to the northern suburbs at around 5.30am, at which time her partner took her to hospital and notified police.

The incident occurred mere streets away from Princes Park, where the body of Eurydice Dixon was found on June 13.
