Melbs Walk Signal To Become Shining Tribute To VIC’s 1st Female Councillor

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

In super excellent, very dope news, an intersection in Richmond will be replacing the little green man on the walk signal with a silhouette of the first female councillor of Victoria, Mary Rogers
Mayor of the City of Yarra Roberto Colanzi, explained the council’s decision, saying that Rogers was “an extraordinary woman”:
“She was one of the first women to be appointed a Justice of the Peace in Victoria in 1928, and later was a special magistrate at the Children’s Court in Richmond.”
The councillor was elected to office in 1920, and was the driving force behind Victoria’s first maternal and child health service. Here’s the absolute badass lady in a B&W rendering:
Colanzi also said that a number of female councillors were looking for a way to acknowledge and celebrate her achievements, and this was what the council landed on:
“We will replace the little green man with a silhouette of Mary and I think it’s a lovely touch.”
The light will be at the intersection of Bridge Road and Bosisto Street in Richmond, just a little bit away from Mary Rogers Square
You’ll be able to see it in action from May 2016, and it’ll be there for a year.
