Melbs Flicks The Switch On Lady-Shaped Tribute To 1st Female Councillor

Richmond is paying tribute to Mary Rogers, Victoria‘s first female councillor, by replacing the usual green walky dude on pedestrian signs with a green walky lady.

The lights will stay up for at least a year, and were installed as part of a $250,000 upgrade to the intersection of Bosisto Street and Bridge Road.
Rogers was elected in 1920 and sat on the council for 5 years, during which she started the first community maternal and child health services in Victoria.
The signs are the result of a motion passed by the Yarra Council in March and were switched on for the first time today after being put in place by VicRoads.
There’s even a little diagram explaining what the different lights mean just in case people get confused because the light is wearing a dress.
