Melbourne Is The Most Livable City In The World, Again

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Liveability Survey has decreed that Melbourne is most liveable city in the world for the second year running so it might be time to put that whole Melbourne/Sydney debate to bed and wrestle with the more pertinent comparison in Sydney vs. Adelaide. Yep. The survey, which judges metrics such as crime rates, access to health care, diversity, cultural events, natural environment, infrastructure, and public transportation, also named three other Australian cities in their top ten with Perth ranking ninth, Sydney ranking seventh and Adelaide controversially ranking equal fifth with Calgary. Brisbane came in at 20th.

“Australian cities continue to thrive in terms of liveability – not only do they benefit from the natural advantages of low population density, but they have continued to improve with some high profile infrastructure investments,” survey editor Jon Copestake said in a statement.

“In Adelaide, projects completed in recent years under the Strategic Infrastructure Plan for South Australia have been enough to move the city above Sydney, whose score is unchanged (from 2011).”
