The fine folks over at the BOM reckon Melbourne can expect a top of 44° today, which would count as the single most scorching day recorded in the city since Black Saturday ten years ago.

The Bureau Of Meteorology reckons the mercury could rapidly drop by as much as 15° in just 20 minutes at point in the mid-afternoon, bringing temperatures back to a more tolerable level.

But that’s not before a massive pillow of air collapses over the city, potentially bringing thunderstorms and violent gusts with it, causing the Country Fire Authority to declare a Total Fire Ban over the whole goddamn state.

As it stands, the fire warning level across is Extreme across the northern reaches of the state and the Mallee area, while the southwest, central, and west Gippsland regions are looking at a Severe rating. The state’s eastern reaches bear the comparatively low but objectively harrowing designation of Very High.

The furnace-like conditions come a day after Adelaide experienced the hottest day ever recorded in one of Australia’s capital cities. We’ll let you know if a Melbourne publican decides to dole out free beer to punters, like one Elizabeth bar-owner did.
