The Enormous Cost Of Mark Zuckerberg’s Security Detail Has Been Revealed

As the high-profile CEO of the world’s most popular and influential social networking site, Mark Zuckerberg presumably attracts his fair share of attention. This week, though, the cost of keeping the Facebook creator safe has been revealed, and it’s a truly staggering figure by any standard.

Per a report in Fortune, Facebook Inc spent approximately $AU 9.91 million last year protecting Zuckerberg at his homes, and on his travels around the United States. This year, they will commit an additional $AU 13.51 for him to spend on protecting both him and his family.

Fortune spoke with risk consultant Roderick Jones, who said this is fairly standard stuff for someone on Mark Zukerberg’s tier: “Security at multiple residences, transportation, a protection team, cyber, travel – if you also have a wife and a few kids, you’re already over $10 million just for a basic package.”

Zuck, who is worth a cool $AU 92.75 billion himself, has never been one to shun the spotlight – he makes frequent public appearances and meets with world leaders, and regularly shares images of himself and his family on social media.

Additionally, top-flight security personnel command six-figure salaries typically work around the clock in teams. In light Zuckerberg’s public profile, as well as the number of family members who might potentially need protecting, the hefty security bill certainly makes sense.
