A politician’s mentions are dark + dank at the best of times, and T-minus 30 hours till an election Budget is not the best of times.
Malcolm Turnbull tweeted a incongruous pic of the trees outside Parliament House changing colour, and – look closely, because this is his big mistake – said they had changed colour “in time for the budget”. Not autumn. The budget. They are #budgettrees and will behave as such.
Parliament has resumed and the trees in the courtyard have changed colour in time for the budget #budgettrees pic.twitter.com/fQ7UCeQmBc

But the mentions – OH, the mentions. They are dank, they are dire, they are strong in the extreme.
A few made the obvious but appropriate joke of the trees being “in the red” much like the budget (lololol):
@TurnbullMalcolm In the red, just like your Budget.#auspol

@TurnbullMalcolm Because you can’t balance a budget they are in red? Should they be in black of Labor were in charge?
— Chris Walsh (@ChrisWalshie) May 1, 2016
@TurnbullMalcolm Same colour as the deficit in the red 🙁

A few laboured under the wildly inaccurate belief that the Greens would attribute this to ‘global warming’ (and yes, inverted commas are necessary when talking about this knuckleheads):
@TurnbullMalcolm the Greens will no doubt blame it in climate change!
— SavourTooth (@Randall1921) May 1, 2016
@TurnbullMalcolm now greens will cry of global warming

And there were a few who somehow linked it to Game of Thrones, which might have been a worthy companion during The Killing Season / Red Wedding years, but now seems a bit of a stretch.
@TurnbullMalcolm red wedding coming for ur lousy gov i hope

.@TurnbullMalcolm This is clearly a #GameofThrones spoiler
— Bri Williams (@willsybee) May 2, 2016
@TurnbullMalcolm are you hinting the budget could be a Red Wedding scenario? #got #gotmondays #auspol #budget #budgettree #camerasarerolling

Changing gears a little here, there are also plenty of responses reminding Turnbull that last week an asylum seeker died after setting himself alight while in detention on Nauru, and Turnbull told us not to get “misty-eyed” about it. Um. Mate.
@TurnbullMalcolm they are so beautiful! Also you are responsible for the torture and deaths of innocent people! Ok bye
— Ben Pobjie (@benpobjie) May 1, 2016
@TurnbullMalcolm a man set himself on fire and died.

A similar situation is happening over on FB, fyi – crackin’ jokes and airing grievances.
Tbqh this whole situation could have been avoided if Malcolm had just chucked a couple’a #nofilter #autumn hashtags on there and been done with it.
