NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced today that lockout laws will be wound back in the Sydney CBD, effectively admitting that they were stifling night-life and the local economy.

In a statement this morning, Berejiklian said that the 1.30am lockout will be lifted in the CBD entertainment precinct, but will remain in effect in Kings Cross.

Speaking about the change, Berejiklian said:

“It’s time to enhance Sydney’s night-life. Sydney is Australia’s only global city and we need our night-life to reflect that.”

It is understood that legislation to wind back the laws will occur later in the year.

The move follows the release of a report into Sydney’s night time economy, which attracted more than 800 submissions, many of which were scathing as to the effect of lockout laws.

Merivale owner Justin Hemmes said that Sydney has become a “ghost town” after dark and that they have proved to be an “embarrassment on an international scale.”

He revealed that in recent times, Madonna and Justin Bieber were both blocked from attending their own after-parties, and that visitors now see “tumbleweeds” in the city at night.
