Lockout Laws Strike Again: Barrio Chino Closes, Rebrands As A Burger Bar

Peter Lew, the owner of a bunch of Sydney venues including Barrio Chino, has said that he’ll be closing the doors on the Kings Cross bar/restaurant all Sydneysiders know and love.

Instead, the bar-owner will be turning Barrio Chino into a pop-up eatery:

“We’ll shut Barrio Chino at the end of March, then open a pop-up at the site, Barrio Burger and Fries.”

So, is this related to lockout laws? Well, Lew hasn’t directly said it, but he has alluded to lockout laws lowering the amount of people spending time dining in the Cross.
He said to Goodfood that dinner trade has been down 30-40 per cent at Barrio Chino; previous to the lockout laws, customers would go there before heading to Hugo’s or another nearby venue that’s now closed.
So, he’s doing the burger/fries pop-up thing as a trial over the next 12 months:
“It will also operate during daytime because that’s where the Cross is headed.”
