LCD Soundsystem’s Synth Genius Gavin Russom Comes Out As Transgender

Gavin Russom, the synthesizer genius who keeps LCD Soundsystem powering along, has revealed her transgender identity in a new interview with Pitchfork.

Russom, 43, has been a part of the iconic collective since 2010 and a solo musician in her own right for many years.

After working on LCD Soundsystem’s upcoming record American Dream, Russom says “I had worked enough that I felt I could take two months and just say, “I’m going to take care of this now.””

Describing the way her identity has manifested itself, Russom described it as a “physical thing in my body.

“It felt like there was almost another person constantly walking next to me being like, “Hey, hey, hey, pay attention to me, hey, hey, hey.””
She says the overall experience “has been one of things falling into place, things that maybe seemed incongruous about my life.”
On the time taken for her to come out, Russom – who intends to use feminine pronouns, and her old name – says “to some degree I wish I had been able to work through it sooner, but I’m also very glad that I worked it the way I did.
“Having gone through 42 and a half years of being in denial and trying to work through this stuff has given me a lot of experience.”

She’ll be appearing with LCD Soundsystem next at their July 14 appearance at Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival, and at a solo DJ gig the night before.
And, in excellent news for us, they’ll also be heading to Australia very, very shortly for Splendour In The Grass.
American Dream is out on September 1, but you can catch her work on Call The Police below. You can also catch her full interview right HERE.
