‘Laser Roo’ Is The Debate-Ending ‘Strayan Flag We’ve All Been Searching For

Because it’s that time of the year again, the inevitable debates about whether we should give Liz the flick and scrub that pesky Union Jack off the top corner of the Australian Flag have arisen yet again (despite the majority of people having an enormous case of the ceebs on the issue).

The issue at the crux of the matter is less that ridding the Union Jack from our national identity is the right thing to do, and more that we – as a country – simply cannot arrive on a consensus about an alternative design.
Scores of variants on the Australian flag have been produced, but none have possessed that “it” factor capable of uniting all of us under a singular banner.
And that, ultimately, is due to our lack of dominant national iconography.
Think about it. Other Commonwealth nations who have successfully (or will in the near future) rid themselves of the Union Jack on their flags have had a logical go-to.
Canada has the Maple Leaf. New Zealand has the Silver Fern. What does Australia have? A bunch of stars? That’s not even unique to us. Literally every other country in the world also has the sky and night.
But fear no more, fellow citizens of this great southern land. For an unnamed internet user has birthed unto us all the defining image that should appeal to the beating heart of all Australians, regardless of colour or creed.
A strong, bold, brave image to carry our nation forward – together, united.
My fellow Australians, we present to you, the almighty Laser Roo flag.
Look at it. It’s magnificent. It represents everything we should be proud of as a country: Our native fauna. Our scientific ingenuity. And our proudly held tradition of stealing shit from New Zealand and claiming it for our own.
Bless you, Laser Roo. May you fly high on flagpoles across the land.
