Kickstarter Campaign Wants To Bring ‘Refugees Welcome’ Mats To Your Doorstep

If we’ve learnt anything over the last 12 months, it’s that Aussies are big on making a statement with their front doorstep, whether it’s in memoriam with #PutOutYourBats (RIP) or driving home the dagger with #PutYourWalletsOut.

Well, here comes another one: a Kickstarter campaign is looking to create “Refugees Welcome” door mats, in the wake of Australia’s impassioned response to the global humanitarian crisis.

Entirely not-for-profit, when/if the pledge amount of $5,000 is reached, the mat design will be sent onto China for production, before being shipped to backers (the $25 per mat price includes postage and delivery).

The Melbourne-based man behind the Kickstarter project, Kiran Atmuri, told P.TV
“My friends and I got together and were reflecting on recent events. We were inspired by the international change in attitude towards refugees, and thought of ways of generating this trend in Australia.”

“Obviously attending gatherings and signing petitions is essential, but believed this simple door mat would add to the refugee acceptance trend. It’s symbolic.”

The message that Australia wants to welcome refugees came loud and clear from both speakers and signs at #LightTheDark rallies around Australia on Monday, and the Federal Government heard; just this morning, Tony Abbott announced Australia would be accepting an additional 12,000 refugees on permanent status.
