Jules Verne, Eat Your Heart Out: Fabled Giant Squid Surfaces In Japan

A video has emerged of a 3.7 meter long giant squid going for a cheerful, Christmas Eve swim amongst the fishing boats in Toyama Bay, Japan.

The squid – which contrary to its name is actually titchy, by giant squid standards – spent a few hours chilling amongst the fishing boats, before being guided out back out to sea by local diver Akinobu Kimura.

“My curiosity was way bigger than fear, so I jumped into the water and go close to it,” he told CNN

“This squid was not damaged and looked lively, spurting ink and trying to entangle his tentacles around me. I guided the squid toward to the ocean, several hundred meters from the area it was found in, and it disappeared into the deep sea.”

Giant squids are thought to grow up to 13 meters in length, and have actually been known to attack humans. They unofficially reached ‘sea monster’ status after a fictional one attacked Captain Nemo and his crew in Jules Verne‘s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

Apparently this is the first sighting of an Architeuthis squid this season (which runs November to March), but there were a full 16 of them last season. Fingers crossed for more, tbqh with you.
