John Legend Slams R. Kelly As A “Serial Child Rapist” In Angry Tweets

John Legend has taken to  Twitter to publicly slam R. Kelly, calling him a “serial child rapist”, after a number of women came forward alleging sexual and physical abuse against him.

Legend is one of few A-list performers to appear in the new documentary series Surviving R. Kelly, in which friends, colleagues and associates speak out about their experiences with the singer.

Fans on social media praised him for his bravery in appearing on the show, whose first episode aired Thursday in the US, but he wrote back in response:

“To everyone telling me how courageous I am for appearing in the doc, it didn’t feel risky at all. I believe these women and don’t give a fuck about protecting a serial child rapist. Easy decision.”

In an interview for the show, John Legend says “R. Kelly has brought so much pain to so many people,” adding that “time’s up” for the singer.

Former backing singer Jovante Cunningham spoke out against R. Kelly in the documentary, claiming that she and several others witnessed him having sex with his 15-year-old protege Aaliyah on a tour bus in the 1990s.

Assistant Demetrius Smith also recalled that he was involved in Kelly’s rumoured secret wedding to Aaliyah, and that he helped the pair obtain falsified paperwork, as she was underage at the time and could not legally get married.

A representative for the singer has offered “no comment” in response to the claims about Aaliyah.
