Jacinda Ardern Promises She Will Never Say The Christchurch Shooter’s Name

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has urged the public to not speak the name of the Christchurch terror attack gunman, asking that the focus remains on those who lost their lives rather than a man who sought notoriety for his actions.

“A 28-year-old man, an Australian citizen, has been charged with one count of murder. Other charges will follow,” she said in an address to Parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

“He will face the full force of the law in New Zealand. The families of the fallen will have justice. He sought many things from his act of terror but one was notoriety, and that is why you will never hear me say his name.”

“To others I implore you: speak the name of those who are lost rather than the name of the man who took them.”

“He may have sought notoriety, but we in New Zealand will give him nothing. Not even his name.”

Ardern also took time to tell address what the nation’s government would be doing moving forward, saying the nation would remain on high alert with police presence at mosques around the country.

A community welfare centre has been set up near the hospital in Christchurch to help all those affected by the attack. Ardern made clear that visas for overseas family members of victims would be prioritised and that funeral costs would also be covered, including repatriation costs should family members want to move their loved ones from the country.

The Prime Minister also announced that there would be an inquiry into what happened on March 15 and the days leading up to the attack. “We will look at what we did know, what we could know, and what we should know,” she said.

“We are grateful that the global Muslim community stands with us and we stand with them.”

On Friday, it will be a week since the attack. Members of the Muslim community will gather for worship on that day. Let us acknowledge their grief as they do. Let us support them. We are one. They are us.”
