Italian Wingsuit Pilot Livestreamed His Own Fatal Collision On Facey

Among all the completely insane entries in the current generation of extreme sports, wingsuit flying is absolutely one of the wildest, and it seems like every other month we hear about someone colliding fatally with a tree or bridge while participating.

Armin Schmieder, an Italian wingsuit pilot, livestreamed his own fatal collision on Facebook during a jump in Switzerland. He told viewers “Today you fly with me” before leaping from a mountaintop. The actual footage does not show the jump – he placed the phone in his pocket, but it the sound continued to record as he lost momentum and hit the ground.
The comments on the feed filled up with people asking him to “say something” and confirm he was alive. Local cops later announced that the body of a 28-year-old Italian was found near Kandersteg.
The area is extremely popular with BASE jumpers. According to Schmieders friends, he was an experienced skydiver, but had only been flying in a wingsuit for about a year.
This comes only days after wingsuit pioneer Alexander Polli died after slamming into a tree in the French Alps. You might remember Polli as the guy who achieved the frankly unbelievable feat of hurtling through a tiny hole in a mountainside cave at 250km/h. Obviously, it’s a dangerous sport.
We won’t link the Schmieder livestream video because it’s really not pleasant, but it’s out there if you’re looking for it. But there you go: wingsuit flying is a really, really dangerous sport. Obviously these guys loved it and knew the risks.
