Indian High Court Allows Lesbian Couple To Live Together In Historic Ruling

An Indian high court in the state of Kerala has ruled in favour of a lesbian couple wanting to live together. This comes just weeks after India’s Supreme Court overturned an 157 year-old ban on “homosexual acts”.

According to The Times of India, the petition was filed by 40 year-old Sreeja, who was seeking to live with her 24 year-old partner, Aruna.

The pair, who have been in a relationship for 2 years, had been living together since August, before Aruna’s parents filed a police report claiming that the 24 year-old was missing. Aruna was then summoned before a court, before being forcibly separated from Sreeja by her parents and their “henchmen”.

“The court set her free on 14 August,” Sreeja’s lawyer told BBC. “But the minute she came out of the court, she and her partner were manhandled and the younger woman was taken away.”

Think that’s bad enough? It gets worse. Aruna’s parents then then admitted her to a mental hospital.

Sreeja was able to visit Aruna at the hospital, but required a court order in order for Aruna to return home with her. This led to the creation of the petition, before the Supreme Court allowed Aruna to go home with Sreeja.

As India is a predominately conservative country, moments like this are powerful.
