Muggles In India Can Now Study An Actual ‘Harry Potter’ Law Course At Uni

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

If your letter has been rudely lost in the mail then you’ll be pleased to learn that Kolkata‘s West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) has introduced a brand new course which deep dives into the Potterverse in order to draw parallels between the wizarding world and India, particularly in the subject of law.

Per the BBC, the course has the fantastic name of ‘An interface between Fantasy Fiction Literature and Law: Special focus on Rowling’s Potterverse’.

Just imagine putting that on your bloody planner.

This is no casual, “Ps Get Degrees” elective though because part of the unit has you literally looking at how social and class rights in India can be equated with the “enslavement of house-eleves and the marginalisation of werewolves”.

Literally:

Course designer Professor Shouvik Kumar Guha told the BBC that the course is an “experiment” to “encourage creative thinking”.

“In our current system, we simply tell students the black letter of law,” Guha said.

The professor also said the course is an opportunity for students to take a big ol’ step out of their comfort zones while being able to learn from a series they’re all probably very much familiar with.

“You can also see so many examples of how media is subverted by political institutions in the Potter books and see parallels in the real world,” Guha told the BBC.

For now, senior students at NUJS will have the option to study the 45-hour discussion-based teaching course as an elective.

The course will kick off in December and surprise, surprise it has already reached full capacity – 40 bloody lucky muggles.

Amazingly, the course module even opens up with a cheeky quote from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:

“Are you planning to follow a career in Magical Law, Miss Granger?” asked Scrimgeour.

“No, I’m not,” retorted Hermione. “I’m hoping to do some good in the world!”

Meanwhile, rehearsals for the Aussie production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has officially taken off. Earlier this week, the play shared some behind-the-scenes footage. In short, “keen” is an understatement.

The play is presented in two parts which you can either watch on the same day or separate days.
