Avoid looking like a total clown tomorrow at the Melbourne Cup Carnival with these beauty hacks from makeup pro and artist to the stars, Rae Morris.
Back yourself with these nifty tips and quick fixes; everything you need for running amok but still looking polished AF by the end of the evening.
DO A SMOKEY EYE, JUST DON’T USE BLACK OR GREYS
While it might seem like a risk best avoided, Rae says it’s fine to do a smokey eye as long as you opt for shades like bronze, gold and terracottas. “When people do a smokey eye they usually think grey or black, but with a shimmery smokey eye, those colours catch the light and actually give you a really beautiful shine.” But, if you’re worried what it’ll look like after a few drinks, Rae recommends using “waterproof makeup or cream pot eyeshadows [instead of powders] – they’re longer lasting and will not move.”
STEER CLEAR OF HEAVY LASHES
“In our profession, we don’t shoot outside between 10am and 2pm because the sun is directly above us and that gives you really bad shadows under your eyes. Add really big, heavy lashes to that equation and you’re going to have two black eyes in your photos” says Rae.
KEEP YOUR EYELIDS MOISTURISER-FREE TO AVOID LINER MISHAPS
“Avoid using moisturiser or eye cream under your eyeliner.” That might sound simple but it’s quite a common makeup mistake, says Rae. “The only thing that’ll lift eyeliner off the lid is oil – and your eyelids are already the oiliest part of your face.” To stop that pesky liner imprint some get on their top lid, Rae swears by “gel eyeliners, because liquids can crack when there’s oil present”.
FIX SMUDGED EYELINER WITH FOUNDATION

If it’s smudged eyeliner you want to fix, Rae recommends “a cotton bud with your foundation” for small touch ups. Otherwise, if things have gone to total and utter sh!t, have a small bottle of créaline (micellar water) handy. “Makeup wipes are fine, except that they leave a film on your skin making it hard to reapply makeup,” she says.
IF YOU WANT YOUR LIPSTICK TO STAY PUT, USE LESS AND GO FOR MATTE

“I have a saying, ‘more on the mouth goes south’, basically the less you put on the longer it will last” so, instead of building up the colour you want, get a higher pigmented lipstick. “Matte lipsticks will always last longer, but if you want a beautiful gloss, just know that every hour you’ll have to touch up and that’s a commitment you’ll have to make.”
DON’T GET TRICKED BY LONG LASTING PRODUCTS
Contrary to popular belief, longer lasting products aren’t the best way to go and touch-ups can only do so much: “If you powder your foundation it might last an hour or two longer, but then it just gets cakey and thick, right? If you want beautiful-looking makeup that stays put, get a heavier coverage but use half the amount. Remember, the less you put on your face the longer it will last.”
STAY AWAY FROM POWDERED MAKEUP IF YOU’RE OUT IN THE SUN

“Get any powder makeup you have and add water to it, and just watch what happens,” says Rae. “Now imagine if you’re sweating and you’ve got powder on, you’ll actually go a bit darker.” At an outdoor-event like the Melbourne Cup, a grease-based or oil-based foundation is the way to go. “Grease-based products act like a wax. They’re a bit more waterproof and are longer lasting. Rae also advises using an anti-shine primer and blotting papers throughout the day, instead of piling more makeup on to replace what’s ‘melted off’.
KEEP YOUR SHOES ON AND USE DRY SHAMPOO TO STOP FEET SWEATS

“Dry shampoo works a treat on sweaty feet. It’s like talcum powder!”
MAKE SURE YOU FACE AND BODY MATCH USING THE SELFIE-TEST
Before you leave the house “take a photo – with flash and without flash – and make sure you face and body are the same colour”. A lot of people continue using their daily foundation on their face even after they’ve fake tanned. Why would you even?
Also, most fake tans smell, so you have to be really careful what kinds of perfume or product you’re putting on top. “I always say to ‘add soy sauce to your perfume’, because that’s the closest to what you’ll smell like when you get a bit sweaty.”

MAKE SURE YOUR MAKEUP IS SPF-PROOFED.
Splotches of red are a clear indication that something’s gone amiss so make sure your foundation has in-built sun protection and you’re wearing sunscreen on the rest of your body. A majority of makeup sold today offers SPF protection, and there’s only marginal difference between SPF 15 and 30 and SPF 30 and 50. advises Rae. After your makeup is on, it’ll be hard to reapply sunscreen so bring along some sunscreen-in-a-can and keep misting yourself every few hours.
