Horrific Somalia Terrorist Bombing Death Toll Rises Above 300

More than 300 people have been killed in the Somalian capital city Mogadishu after twin explosions decimated a hotel and surrounds in the worst terror attack in the countries history.

The number of dead is still expected to rise as many continue to search for their missing friends and relatives. Of the casualties so far, around 150 of the buried were unable to be recognised due to the severity of the explosions.

No organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack in which a truck filled with explosives was detonated outside a busy intersection, followed by a second explosion two hours later. Al Shabaab, an group allied with Al Qaeda, have staged regular attacks in Mogadishu against the government since 2007.

Locals continue to pour over the site, searching for missing relatives or collecting bodies of the deceased, with many families burying their own kin as well as the government burying those who cannot be recognised.

The ABC reports how many continue to linger with fading hope. Local woman Halima Nur:

My last time to speak with my brother was some minutes before the blast occurred. By then he told me, he was on the way to meet.

I am afraid he was among the unrecognised charred bodies that were buried yesterday. I have no hope of getting him alive or dead. But I cannot go home.

Mogadishu’s mayor Thabit Abdi continues to call for unity in response to the areas worst ever terrorist attack:

Mogadishu is a place of respect, and if we remain united like we are today, moving ahead, we will surely defeat the enemy, Allah willing.
