Here’s Another Ripper Fix For Those Fkn Eyesore “Vote No” Billboards

Thanks to a non-binding postal vote on whether or not all Australians should have equal rights, we’ve been thrust into a long and dispiriting period of public debate that’s already seen shit get really nasty.

But lucky for all of us, we are a nation of piss-takers and authority-despisers, and a number of people have been responding to hatred and bigotry with light-hearted larrikinism.

Yesterday we saw Tassie do the rest of Australia proud with their pizza place declaring, boldly, that it’s okay to vote no to pineapple on pizza.

Today, we’ve got this small bit of community kick-back, from a residence in Coogee in NSW.

According to writer Holly Wainwright, who posted the picture on her Instagram, this house sits in the shadow of the local Anglican church, who’d strung up the “It’s okay to say ‘no’” banner.

Their response? An extremely polite, very difficult to argue with addendum:

“But it’s nicer to vote yes.”

You’re not bloody wrong, resident of Coogee.

In the comments on Wainwright’s post, another Coogee local mentioned that this house wasn’t the only one to respond to the church’s lousy signage:

I also like the house on the diagonal from the church who has red fairy lights around their sign saying “LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR VOTE YES” —- I was so angry about this religious organisation campaigning on what is a civil rights issue, but I am inspired by my neighbours.

Bloody lovely stuff, really. In amongst a whole shitty quagmire of bad times, bad feelings and bad neighbours, there are some people willing to keep the light on.
