Harmony Korine Films For Proenza Schouler

Proenza Schouler have followed suit from Karl and Alexander by using a short film to showcase their latest Fall/Winter collection; but instead of taking the ill advised route of their predecessors they’ve kept out of the director chair and handed the reins to a professional: cult filmmaker Harmony Korine.

Inspired by the urban, graffiti-esque photographs of artist Christopher Wool, the brand’s designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough yearned to create a new perspective for their collection through the eyes of cinema provocateur Korine (Kids, Julien Donkey-Boy).

Given only one of Wool’s photographs and a series of their designs, Korine spent one and a half days in Nashville Tennessee filming a series of 8mm vignettes, entitled ‘Act Da Fool’. The film follows several teenage girls on the cusp of adulthood as they drink, smoke, spray graffiti and skulk around schoolyards. It is a poignant vision exploring the confusion, wonder and pressures of growing up.

Korine describes the film as depicting “girls who sleep in abandoned cars and set things on fire. It’s about the great things in life. The stars in the sky and lots of malt liquor.”

‘Act Da Fool’ premieres on the Proenza Schouler Website come early September.
