Happy Selfie Day! Aussies Are Taking 50M Of These Damn Things Every Week

Hell yeah, Australia. We’re officially a nation of narcissists. (Not in the medically diagnosable condition, more in the sense that we cannot stop looking at our own damn faces.)

New research by ALDImobile says we, as a nation, are taking 50 million selfies every single week. That’s 2.6 billion selfies every year. That’s…. just way too many selfies per decade to even comprehend, tbh – and that’s before you take into account entire new generations of kids growing old enough to be able to hold a phone and pout (approximately age three).

The research, undertaken in partnership with Galaxy Research and released to coincide with National Selfie Day (today), found that almost four in five smartphone users admit to taking selfies, and 1.5 million of us snap at least one selfie a day.

But don’t worry – it’s purely a form of art, according to psychologist and relationship expert Jacqui Manning.

“There are many different reasons why people take and post selfies,” she told PEDESTRIAN.TV. “Throughout time people have always shown a need to document their lives as a form of art, to communicate with others or as a way to transcend. Today, selfies have enabled us to share a picture of ourselves in an instant with family and friends which is much less time consuming than painting a self-portrait like back in the 15th century.

“As a nation, we are taking over 50 million selfies per week because we can,” Jacqui continued. “Technology advances in our smartphones have enabled us to take as many selfies as we like, anytime and anywhere. These capabilities have amplified the human desire to record moments in our lives and different experiences. From snapping a selfie in a new city, eating a delicious gelato or just enjoying ourselves and having a good time, these are memories that we can always reflect on.”

It’s not our strong as hell desire to see our own face from twenty bajllion different yet barely distinguishable angles. It’s art and technology‘s fault. Wonderful.
