Well, here’s a thing. Robert Mueller – the former FBI director appointed as special counsel to take over the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election – is now investigating Trump himself for possible obstruction of justice.
And all of this on his 71st birthday! Happy birthday, Donald!
This comes after former FBI director James Comey said in his testimony before Congress that he believed Trump fired him as a way of blocking the agency’s Russia probe. He didn’t explicitly allege that Trump had obstructed justice, suggesting that it was Mueller’s job to work that out.
The scoop is from the Washington Post, who cite five anonymous sources. Three high-level members of America’s security community are being interviewed as soon as next week, the Post claims.
Trump’s legal team ain’t too keen on this report, as you might imagine. “The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal,” a spokesman for Mr Trump’s legal team, Mark Corallo, said.
Even if Trump is found to have obstructed justice, that doesn’t mean he’s being sent to the slammer. Quite unlikely, actually. But it could give fuel to impeachment proceedings. Considering Republicans absolutely dominate Congress right now, impeachment would really only happen if they wanted it to.
But it’s certainly enjoyable regardless – insofar as it has probably ruined his birthday, especially.
