Good Riddance: Turnbull Dumps Abbott’s Beloved Knights And Dames

Hey, remember when Tony Abbott was still Prime Minister? And he wouldn’t stop making ‘captain’s picks’? And then he went and reintroduced Knights and Dames to the Order of Australia? And it was an all round terrible idea? Remember that?

Malcolm Turnbull has shut. it. down.

As of today, Turnbull has dumped Knights and Dames from the Order of Australia, bringing one of our most excruciatingly awkward chapters in recent Australian history to a close.

The happy news came through via a statement this morning:

“The cabinet recently considered the Order of Australia, in this its 40th year, and agreed that Knights and Dames are not appropriate in our modern honours system.”

“The Cabinet resolved to recommend to Her Majesty that she amend the Letters Patent, which establish the Order of Australia, so that Knights and Dames would no longer be appointed to the Order.”

Queen Elizabeth has already approved the decision, Prince Phillip has (probably) already forgotten about it. Couldn’t give a shit, tbh. The thing is done and we can all rest easy.

It is over. Be free now.
