GOOD: Police Are Investigating That Fucked ‘Yeah The Boys’ FB Event

NSW Police are investigating a Facebook page to see if the widespread abuse occurring in it constitutes a crime.

Earlier today we wrote about the ‘Yeah The Boys Meet Up‘ Facebook event, where thousands upon thousands of fans of the popular ‘Yeah The Boys’ Facebook page have been leaving violent and sexist comments, and abusing anyone – male and female – pushing back against this abuse.

(For the record, YTB claim to have no affiliation with the event.)

Police have now confirmed to PEDESTRIAN.TV that they are investigating the event page to see if any crimes have been committed.

“We have reported this to Facebook, and we’re waiting for word from our investigators in the local area command at the moment,” a police spokesperson confirmed.

He couldn’t confirm what would cause this event to be a police matter.

“That’s advice that I”m going to seek from the investigators,” he said. “They’re going to look at the entire page, and they’re gonna look at the posts and the comments, and they’ll get back to us.”

The event now appears to have either been taken down or made private. However – and not-at-all-surprisingly, unless you’ve never tried to report anything online – Facebook didn’t deem the event in violation of its community standards.

Online abuse is a notoriously tricky area for law enforcement, with many women (often but not always the target of online abuse) feeling like police aren’t equipped to deal with the realities of violence in a digital age.

Earlier this year, however, 25-year-old Sydney man Zane Alchin was charged and given a 12-month good behaviour bond for sending a woman over 50 messages, most of them obscene, via Facebook in two-hour period.
