UPDATE 13/03/2020
Golden Plains has issued an update on its website this morning, confirming that the person who tested positive to COVID-19 was not contagious while at the festival.

The Victorian Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) conducted an investigation yesterday when the news broke, and determined that the person apparently wasn’t exhibiting symptoms until after the festival.

“The DHHS has now completed its investigation,” the statement said. “It has been determined that the individual to which the case relates was not unwell with the infection during the festival.”

“As a result, no further public health action is required by festival attendees, including workers, volunteers and artists.”

Days after the Golden Plains festival wrapped up in the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre to Melbourne’s south-west, a punter has tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The ABC has reported that the person had recently returned from an overseas trip, and had fallen unwell on the Sunday of the festival.

Approximately 12,000 people had purchased tickets to the festival, which ran regular housekeeping reminders, encouraging people to keep their hands clean and directing anyone who felt unwell to immediately go to first aid.

Events in the Meredith venue typically provide hand sanitiser at every toilet block, and Golden Plains had also installed sanitiser at information and assistance huts across the campsite to help combat potential coronavirus concerns.

The news comes as the Pixies, one of the festival’s headline acts, postponed the remainder of their Australian tour. The band were set to play shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth over the next week.

UPDATE: A spokesperson from the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services has released the following statement about the Golden Plains COVID-19 case.

“We are aware of a case associated with the Golden Plains Music Festival. However, contact tracing is still underway.

Due to the outdoor nature of the festival the risk of transmission is low. More information about this case will be available tomorrow when the details of Victorian COVID-19 cases will be updated.”
