George Brandis Reckons Tony Abbott Was A Victim Of Religious Bigotry

George Brandis has come out with a comment or two about bigotry during today’s roundtable on religious freedom at the Australian Human Rights Commission in Sydney.
“The incessant, smearing ridicule of the former prime minister, Mr Abbott, on account of his religious faith, was bigotry at its most shameful — made worse, if that is possible, by the added hypocrisy of the fact that many of those very same people like to pose as the enemies of bigotry.”
He also said that Australians have an “inconsistent” approach to religious tolerance, and that he was concerned about (what he claims are) growing levels of anti-Catholicism in Australia.
While we’re kinda thinking that maybe Aussies were a little more concerned about our former leader’s generally conservative views, apparent difficulty with public speaking, and bizarre fondness for raw onions than his choice of religion, we were surprised to hear that Brandis did also call for freedom for all religions, not just Christianity.
He also said that Muslim people were often the victims of “ignorant” suspicion and hostility, and that Australia had to address the “alarming emergence of intolerance of religious faith, by some of the most voluble elements in the community”, and promote a spirit of tolerance.
But, unfortunately for Brando, social media #neverforgets:
