mick hawi shot dead

Mahmoud “Mick” Hawi, former chief of the Comanchero bikie gang, has been shot outside a Fitness First gym in the south Sydney suburb of Rockdale.

Witnesses say that Hawi was in his luxury 4WD when he was shot six times at around midday today. He went into cardiac arrest, and was taken to St George Hospital by paramedics called to the scene, where he was pronounced brain dead. He remains on life support.

NSW Ambulance Superintendent Greg Price told reporters:

Four paramedic units were on scene within seven minutes. The patient was transported to hospital within six minutes from arrival on scene. The scene was very confronting for emergency service personnel. The paramedics performed their role to a high standard.

Witnesses describe a bloody scene, with one onlooker telling ABC News he “tried not to look“.

A burnt-out car discovered in Chandler Lane in Rockdale is believed to have been used as the getaway vehicle.

Hawi was sentenced to 28 years in prison in 2012, for the murder of Hells Angels bikie Anthony Zervas during a 2009 brawl at Sydney Airport.

However, his conviction was overturned, and he instead served a sentence for manslaughter and was released in 2015.

Since then, Hawi has kept a low profile. A crime scene has been set up at the gym in Rockdale, and a spokesperson for Fitness First has confirmed that a shooting occurred in the Rockdale premises car park, and that the franchise is assisting police with their investigation. The gym will remain closed until further notice.
