A Money Expert’s Tips On Maxing Deals From The eBay / Flybuys Partnership

There’s two kinds of people when it comes to flybuys points – those who actively accumulate as much as they can, and those who get a nice surprise when they’re told they have enough saved up to cop a free flight. But now that you can earn points on purchases made via eBay, it’s a good time to assess how you handle your rewards.

We wanted to know how to make the most of this new arrangement, so we got financial expert Kirsty Lamont of Mozo.com.au to give us her flybuys tips. Of course, you’ll first need to link your card to your eBay account which you can do here. Once you’ve done that, give the suggestions below a red hot go.

Keep an eye out for offers

You’ll get points offers and special deals sent directly to your inbox, so it’s worth checking them out to see if they’re applicable to you, Lamont says.

For example, eBay’s currently offering a sign up bonus to “deliver even more points into your account or boost the value of the points you’ve already earned,” she said. This will give you 10 times the amount of points on your first eBay x flybuys transaction.

Team up to maximise your points

“Link multiple accounts in your household to earn points faster,” Lamont said. “With your family or partner you can have two or more flybuys cards in your household.”

In other words, each cardholder can link to their own eBay account, meaning you’ll be able to pool your points together to earn more. Not bad if you’re saving up for a holiday.

Track your balance

Lamont says keeping an eye on your balances online is a good way to get a handle on how quickly you earn points vs how quickly you spend them.

“Keeping a record on how you’re tracking is helpful in gauging when is best to spend your points as you continue to accumulate more,” she said. “You can also download the flybuys app and view your transaction history to see how many points you’ve collected per transaction so you can track on the go.”

Spend your points wisely

“When it comes to spending your points, eBay vouchers offer more bang for your buck,” Lamont says. “These can be redeemed at a rate of 2,000 points for a $10 voucher, allowing you to purchase any item on the eBay platform.”

She also stresses that you can hold onto your points for as long as you like, as they never expire, so don’t feel like you need to spend them just for the sake of it.
