Fill ‘Er Up, Sydney – Petrol Prices Are Expected To Spike By The Weekend

Hey Sydney! Is your car low of fuel? Huffing fumes? Running on the smell of an oily rag? It’d probably be smart to stop putting off that trip to the bowser today – if you wait till the weekend, you’re probably gonna get slugged.

The NRMA has issued a statement today warning motorists in the NSW capital that Sydney‘s petrol prices are expected to spike by as much as 15c per litre by the weekend. Yes the salad days of just six months ago where petrol in some parts of the city dropped below $1 per litre are long gone once again.
Come Friday, the spike is tipped to see petrol back up to genuine 2014 prices, once again nudging around the $1.50 mark on average. As of today, the cheapest gas in the city could be found at Hurstville Metro, which was peddling off low octane unleaded for $1.23.
The good news is is that this spike is temporary, and is all to do with how Australian oil prices are structured. The whole thing works in phases, with a price spike occurring at the beginning of the phase, before prices settle back down.
NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury stated “Nowhere in the world has this sort of pricing structure. We believe largely it’s a marketing strategy by the oil companies.”

“If this fortnightly trend continues, then in a couple of weeks we should see the average price get down to $1.28.
A $0.15 per litre increase means for a medium sized car you’ll be paying around $10 less today for a full tank of gas, as opposed to Friday. Or, to put it another more important way – you’ll be having one less pint at the pub if you wait to fill the car up on Saturday.
So go fill the ole’ beast up today, and enjoy yourself an extra delicious frosty beverage this weekend. Fiscal responsibility!
