FFS, 7 News Is Polling Readers On Whether Yassmin Leaving Australia Is Good

You have to hand it to certain pockets of the Australian media: they certainly know how to keep a story rolling.
On Monday, media commentator and engineer Yassmin Abdel-Magied announced she’d be leaving Australia for London. If she were any other familiar face in the Aussie broadcast environment, Abdel-Magied’s departure would be seen as the next step in a high-profile career.

But, Abdel-Magied’s status as conservative media’s most beloved punching bag means her departure is imbued with further meaning. Ever since her much-maligned ANZAC Day post, breathless reports about her Islamic faith and viewpoints on social issues have dominated a number of right-leaning publications.

So, in response to Abdel-Magied’s news, 7 News Australia decided to query its Facebook audience about the decision. How, pray tell, would the Australian public react to her decision to bounce? What would a public, whose primary exposure to her has been through savaging reports, say to her upcoming UK journey?

The answer is that so far, roughly 85% of respondents are pleased she’s taking the trip. But, that’s really not the point. The issue here is that the Australian media, which has spent the best part of the year demonising Abdel-Magied, is now asking readers whether they think her departure is grouse.
Also notable: the post asks if she should “stay and face her critics.” Until this very point, she bloody well has. And comments on the poll only reveal more of the ‘criticism’ some people believe she should stick around for.
Others have cottoned onto this fact, asking why a wing of the media which supposedly prides itself on free speech has gone to such lengths to shun an opposing viewpoint, and generally lamenting the fact this is a real situation the Aussie media has created.

For what it’s worth, Abdel-Magied did not detail a reason for her departure, but the inference is clear.

Aw you guys! I’m really, truly going to miss this paper’s balanced, fair and sensical reporting. ????
