‘Fairy Tale’ Book Filled With Inspiring, Rebellious Women Crowdfunds $670k

If you’re in need of news that is completely devoid of negativity, congratulations friendo – you have found it. This, right here, is just top-to-bottom good vibes.

We say that, because at time of writing, a Kickstarter campaign for Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls – a children’s book re-imagining the stories of 100 inspirational women as fairy tales – is just about to wrap up. A cool $630,000 above their original target.

TBH, looking at the book, it’s not hard to see why. Featuring the tales of Serena Williams, Frida Kahlo, and the first female African-American astronaut Mae Jemison, each story in the book will eventually be accompanied by an original artwork from female artists worldwide.

Campaign founders Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo, also of kid’s media company Timbuktu Labs, told The Guardian they’re just wildly stoked to use their influence to reach the kiddos.

Favilli said  “we’re both in our early 30s, we’re female entrepreneurs, and we know first-hand how hard it is to succeed, to be considered, to be given a chance.”

Even in a genre as innocent as children’s lit, those chances still don’t come as often for girls. The pair said they were inspired by stats that show female protagonists made up less than 8% of 6,000 kid’s stories published in the past century.

It looks like a fair few of those IRL stories are about to get some shine, though. If you feel so inclined, you can still throw your hard-earned bucks at the campaign in exchange for those hallowed pages – and other immensely gr8 thangs, like posters, colouring books, and even teaching packs.

Oh, and there’s nothing stopping you from snapping a few up for yourselves, and waiting eagerly for them to rock up in November this year. Just saying. Like we said – good vibes all around, yeah?
