Hundreds Gather In Melbourne For Mass ‘Die-In’ To Protest Climate Inaction

More than a thousand protesters gathered in Melbourne today to call for stronger governmental action on climate change, blocking city streets and bringing traffic to a standstill.

The snap protest, organised by UK-based group Extinction Rebellion, saw demonstrators demand an end to new coal mining projects like the proposed Adani Carmichael project in Central Queensland.

The march culminated with a ‘die-in’, which saw protesters lay down in Swanston St to emulate the species liable to become extinct due to climate change.

The protest comes nearly a week after the 2019 Federal Election, which the Australian Greens attempted to label the “climate election”.

Despite making headway in terms of support nationwide – most notably in Queensland, where the party enjoyed considerable swings in its favour – a sizeable downturn in support for the Australian Labor Party saw the Coalition record an unlikely election win.

That result has been criticised by climate change activists, who point to the Coalitions support for the Adani Carmichael project and the continuation of the coal industry as evidence the government is not taking appropriate steps to limit Australia’s carbon emissions.
