Even George Brandis Thinks It’s Nuts That Abbott Wants To Ban Macklemore

Here it is, folks. Here’s your tipping point. We’ve officially gone too far over the edge to the point where there’s no turning back. This bullshit “debate” the Liberal Party has insisted we have on marriage equality has finally cooked things so intensely thoroughly that now George Brandis of all bloody people is the voice of reason. Way to go, dickheads.

Tony Abbott‘s insanely bizarre assertion that sports shouldn’t be politicised that followed the announcement that Macklemore will be performing ‘Same Love‘ at the NRL Grand Final this weekend has been widely chided, mostly because of the sly fact that Abbott made a very well-documented habit of politicising sport himself. See, when they say “keep politics out of sport,” what they really mean is “keep *your* politics out of sport.” There’s a difference.

Regardless, Macklemore himself has merely taken that as fuel to the fire, promising a particularly spirited performance come Sunday, and now even George Bloody Brandis is questioning the sanity of Abbott’s comments.

Brandis, the Attorney-General who once defended Australian citizens’ right to be racist while speaking on the floor of the Federal Senate, appeared on ABC News Breakfast carrying the furrowed brow of a nation as he chided Abbott for being a big hypocritical dummy.

Brandis calmly pointed out that if Abbott was, as he so often claims, such a big proponent of free speech, then why does he suddenly have an issue with an artist singing a chart-topping tune (it went to #1 here in Australia, remember) before a Grand Final? Y’know, like they’ve done for literally every Grand Final for the past umpteen years.

So Abbott doesn’t want Macklemore to perform his marriage equality tune at the Grand Final. A three-minute song. One of four he’ll be performing. Before the game starts.

Talk about needing to grow a spine, holy shit.
