Turns Out That Elf Was Right & Spreading Xmas Cheer Is The Best Way To Boost Your Mood

While some of us might be counting down the days ’till we can shovel trifle into our gobs and play backyard cricket with the fam, for others, Christmas is a much tougher time of year.

So, if you are feeling grateful this festive season, spreading kindness and cheer to other Aussies in a less fortunate position should be at the top of your Christmas list.

As our good friend Buddy puts it in the 2003 cinematic masterpiece Elf, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” And he’s so right. With that in mind, please imagine I am loudly singing these below paragraphs in your face…

Why we should be spreading kindness

Between ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks and the rising cost of living, Aussies have been through the absolute wringer this year. Devastating storms and floods also inundated New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, leaving many folks with uninhabitable homes, no possessions and a massive recovery effort. Along with people who may be experiencing violence, homelessness or mental health issues, there are plenty of people across the country who could use a helping hand right now.

The bright side of being generous

Of course, we should all be spreading kindness to help out our fellow humans who are doing it tough. But, there are a few good perks to it, too. Performing acts of generosity can boost our own happiness and reduce perceived stress and symptoms of depression and anxiety. We love to hear it. It can even be linked to physical health benefits!

So, if this year has gotten you down too, you might as well pay it forward to feel a little better.

How you can help others

Ready to spread some Christmas cheer but not sure how? GIVIT can help steer you in the right direction. The Australian not-for-profit manages donations by capturing all offers of goods and services online, and removing the need for charities and services to sort, store and dispose of unrequested donations. They save valuable resources and streamline the giving process so more essential items and services get to vulnerable Aussies. Handy at this busy time of year!

Whether it’s funding a request, offering to put an item into the online warehouse, or picking up some bevs at Dan Murphy’s on Saturday December 3rd for National GIVIT Day, check out all the ways you can help out, here.

And keep loudly spreading that Christmas spirit!
