Drop Everything, Canberra’s Skywhale Is Up For Sale

It was with a heavy heart, this month, that Canberra unofficially shelved an icon: the ugly, loveable beast known as Skywhale—hated by some, but secretly adored by all.

That dazzling queen’s career was declared over by ACT’s chief minister Andrew Barr—a statement he since corrected: there was still life left in the girl after all, but probably wouldn’t be a mascot for ACT ceremonies—her two-year-long stint was unceremoniously coming to an end.

Today, there’s some great news to ease that tragedy, as the Canberra Times reports that Skywhale, the lady, the legend, is up for sale.

Gimme.

Sadly, like all good things, there’s a catch. Victorian company Global Ballooning currently owns Skywhale, and their whole business is up for sale, including Skywhale herself. If you’ve got your eye on the prize, the cost of Skywhale isn’t the only thing stopping you: it’s the cost of the entire company which you’ll have to buy to get her.

Worth it, tho.

According to one of Global Ballooning’s owners, the beauty/the beast is worth “an extraordinary amount”, and lamented its few flights across the ACT: “she is a beautiful creature,” co-owner Sarah Clegg said, “it’s unfortunate the ACT taxpayer hasn’t seen more of the skywhale.” Damn straight. Shut up and take our money.
