Donald Trump’s Granddaughter Has Inexplicably Become A Yuge Meme In China

The world may be on the precipice of a true geopolitical reckoning, and the uneasy relationship between the United States and China could absolutely fall to bits under the guidance of a President Trump, but that doesn’t mean the Chinese population can’t briefly enjoy a meme.

Trump’s young granddaughter Arabella, daughter of his daughter Ivanka, recorded a video back in February celebrating Chinese New Year, in which she recited a simple poem in Mandarin.  Since Trump’s election, the Instagram video has garnered about 8.7 million views and 20,000 likes after hitting Chinese social media.
Arabella is reciting the poem Sympathy for Peasants – a poem learned by many toddlers in China as they develop a grasp on the language:

Hoeing millet in the midday heat,
Sweat dripping to the earth beneath.
Do you know the food on your plate,
Each grain was hard-earned.

The opinion of Chinese social media was split – with many pointing out that Trump rattled his sabre at China during the debates, calling the nation’s government currency manipulators and bemoaning the jobs lost from America’s Rust Belt to low-wage Chinese factories.

“It does not mean his granddaughter is friendly to China, although she has been speaking Chinese since she was young,” one comment reads. “Language is just a communication tool. Hope this lovely girl will love Chinese culture.”

Welp. The memes before the storm.
