Well, Here We Go

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have convened in Singapore, marking the first-ever meeting between heads of the two nations.

Trump and Kim shook hands for a quick photo opportunity, before briefly discussing their hopes for the summit.

“I feel really great, we’re gonna have a great discussion, and I think tremendous success – It’ll be tremendously successful,” Trump said.

“The old prejudices and practices worked as obstacles in our way forward, but we overcame all of them and we are here today,” said Kim through a translator.

The pair then left for a private meeting, reportedly attended only by the two heads of state and their translators.

Despite the flash of the occasion, the meeting is truly momentous: it is the first time a Western leader has had the chance to directly discuss North Korea’s troubling nuclear program, and the nation’s long-running string of provocations.

It also brings the tantalising prospect of warming relations with the notoriously isolated country, with the hopeful end goal of aiding citizens who endure extreme poverty.

An official end to the Korean War is another desirable and lofty goal. Then again, it could all go to shit, and it wasn’t so long ago that Trump was tweeting about Kim as a “Rocket Man”.

We’ll have to wait and see how this one pans out. If you see enormous mushroom clouds on the horizon, you’ll know how it ended up.
