After candidly opening up earlier this week to the 21st Century’s shrink of choice, instagram, and making the whole internet want to give him a comforting bear hug, Donald Glover has spoken out about what compelled him to scrawl with brazen honesty on crappy hotel stationery for the world to see. Spoiler, it wasn’t an amateur acting class.

Speaking with People Magazine this week, Glover admitted, “That night, we had a show, and then afterwards, I had this moment of feeling like, ‘What’s the point? Why am I even here?’” For any celebrity to address their fans with that kind of candor, that kind of straight up sincerity, without shaving their head or burning things, is an unfortunate rarity. When it’s news that a celebrity catches public transport, it becomes ever clearer that people sometimes forget celebrities are, well, humans.
Donald Glover extrapolated that concept by saying what shouldn’t need to be said, that celebrities, like everyone else, have shitty days too: “I don’t think those feelings are that different from what everybody’s feeling. Most people just don’t tell everybody.”
“I was just tired of telling people I was tired. It felt like every day someone would ask, ‘What’s wrong. Are you OK?’ ” Glover said to People, “And I would say, ‘I’m tired, I’m tired.’ I didn’t want to do that anymore. I guess sometimes not telling the truth is just as bad as telling a lie.”
Still want to give the dude a hug.
