Disappointed Grandpa Morgan Freeman Is “Surprised” Australia Doesn’t Have SSM

Everyone’s favourite surrogate celebrity grandfather, Morgan Freeman, has some bad news for all of us recalcitrant grandkids in Australia: he’s disappointed in us.

While in town to promote his new six-part series The Story of Us, the Oscar-winner told NewsCorp that he was surprised Australia was still so far behind the rest of the world when it comes to marriage equality.

During the interview, Freeman spoke fondly about a time when he’d ended up in a gay bar in Sydney, having a blast and loving life (as one usually does in those hallowed spaces).

It was so much fun and I thought there was this feeling of freedom. I am surprised Australia doesn’t have marriage equality.

Freeman’s new series, produced with National Geographic, documents an effort to understand what brings humanity together – so we can consider him a bit of an expert on things like same-sex marriage, and how important it really is.

I think one of the catalysts people have experienced here in America is the realisation that some of their relatives are gay.

What are you going to say if your 14 or 15-year-old son comes and says, ‘Dad, I’m gay’. Some are excommunicated immediately but most aren’t. There is a new mindset and an understanding that it isn’t some choice you are making.

When we’re disappointing the 80-year-old bloke who’s so wise and full of gravitas that he was literally chosen to be the voice of God, you know we’re stuffing up pretty badly.

Come on, Australia. Make Grandpa Freeman proud again. Let’s get this postal vote knocked on its arse, and Morgan can get on with what he does best: narrating strangely moving documentaries about penguins.

A brighter future for us all.
