David Hicks Wins Appeal Against Terrorism Conviction In US Military Court

More than a decade later, the final step in Australian David Hick‘s US conviction has come to an end overnight, as Hicks has won a challenge against a US Military Court over his 2001 terrorism conviction.

David Hicks’ appeal against a US Military court at the US Navy Base in Guantanamo, where Hicks was imprisoned from 2002 – 2007, following news last month that the United States admitted Hicks was wrongfully convicted for providing “material support to terrorism”.

The decision released overnight will provide a sense of closure for David Hicks, as Wells Dixon from the Centre of Constitutional Rights said, “today’s decision is a powerful reminder that he committed no crime, he is innocent of any offence. David Hicks can now be truly free of Guantanamo.”

After eight years since Hicks’ Alford plea and deportation to Australia in 2007, the decision marks a huge success for justice.

Hick’s father Terry Hicks told the ABC, “It’s been a long road which has now finally come to an end.”
